Bloomingdale’s in Hot Eggnog Over Holiday Ad
Upon flipping through the pages of the latest Bloomingdale’s catalog, you may have seen a particularly disturbing advertisement that read, “Spike your best friend’s eggnog when they’re not looking.” Excuse me. The model who is donning a white blazer with black lapels is all smiles, while her “best friend” dressed in a dark suit looks menacing and suspicious.
Bloomingdale’s attempt at an edgy and controversial ad has led to backlash via the internet. One Twitter user hopped on and said, “It’s beyond me how this was ever cleared to be published in the first place.” Ads like Bloomingdale’s are evidence that it is important for the legal department and the marketing department to work together. For many concerned Twitter users, the ad suggests that “roofing” your best friend is perfectly acceptable interaction during the holiday season. Hopefully, lawsuits won’t ensue over the ad’s attempt to be cheeky.
Since the creepy ad made headlines, Bloomingdale’s Spokesperson responded, “In reflection of recent feedback, the copy we used in our recent catalog was inappropriate and in poor taste.” The company added via its Twitter, “We heard your feedback about our catalog copy, which was inappropriate and in poor taste. Bloomingdale’s sincerely apologizes.”
